About St. Sylvester

St. Sylvester Church at Humboldt Boulevard and Palmer Square was founded in 1884 to serve English-speaking Catholics who lived in the territory north of Humboldt Park.

In March 1884, Father John J. Delaney was appointed Pastor of the newly designated parish.  On June 1, 1884, the first Mass was celebrated on the second floor of the town hall and engine house, and then known as the Township of Jefferson Fire House.  From this time until November 25, 1884, the engine house at Stave and Prindiville Streets was the focal point for Sunday Mass of the Catholics in this area.  During Father Delaney's time property was acquired at the corner of California and Shakespeare Avenues and here the first church and rectory were built.  The name St. Sylvester was selected by Father Delaney in honor of his father, Sylvester Delaney.

In  1906 the cornerstone of the present church was laid. A Gothic structure, its clean lines and lack of inside pillars made it an appreciated place of worship with an unobstructed view from every part of the church.  The church was officially dedicated on November 3, 1907.
